My Wife Earns More Than Me

A three minute read · Ro Paul

The offer came through and she took it, and the number that came with it is bigger than yours now. You were happy for her. You are still happy for her. You booked the restaurant, you raised your glass, you told her she had earned every bit of it, and you meant all of it.

Something went quiet in you that night anyway. Not anger. Nothing that loud. Since then you have been staying at work later for no reason you could explain to anyone. You stopped bringing up your own week at dinner. At the barbecue you made the joke about being a kept man and everybody laughed, and you laughed too. Nobody in the house has said a word about any of it. Not her. Not you. It has been months.

This has a name

What you just read is not jealousy and not a character flaw. It is a state, and it has a name.

Stone is the shut-down state. When something triggers him, instead of heat or words, everything in a man goes quiet and heavy. He pulls in. A wall goes up. He is still in the room, but he is gone. From the outside he looks calm or cold. On the inside he has gone somewhere his wife, his kids, and most of the time even he himself cannot reach.

Family: Solid (moves away) Story underneath: "I'm not good enough" Core strategy: Withdraw Energy: heavy, immovable

Stone is one of the five states in the Finding Your Core model. Four are protective states a man snaps into when he is triggered. The fifth, Water, is the centered state and the way back. The full picture of Stone, what it looks like at home and where it comes from, lives on the Stone page.

Why it happens in this exact moment

Stone does not need a fight to show up. It needs a hit that lands somewhere a man is not allowed to admit he got hit. This is one of those. You cannot be angry at her, because she did nothing wrong. She worked hard and it paid. You cannot be sad about it out loud, because saying it makes you the small man in the story. So the feeling has nowhere to go, and your body does what it has always done with a feeling that has no permission. It goes heavy and it goes silent.

Underneath sits the old story, I'm not good enough. For years it ran in the background with nothing to point at. Now there is a figure on a payslip that seems to agree with it. The provider thing goes deeper than most men know until it gets tested. Nobody sat you down and taught it to you. You picked it up from your father, from the men on your street, from every story you ever heard where the man who cannot pay for it is the man who is not enough. No one taught us this, and no one taught us what to do on the day it stops being true.

What it costs

The money is not what costs you. The silence is. She just had the biggest win of her career and she cannot enjoy it in her own kitchen, because the man she loves went flat and will not say why. She may not read that as your old story, because she cannot see your old story. She may read it as he is not proud of me, or he does not want me anymore, or something is wrong and he will not tell me. People fill in a reason when they are not given one, and the reason they invent is often worse than the truth.

Look at what the state has you doing. You work later, and to her that looks like distance. You stopped talking about your own job, which can look like a secret. In bed you went flat, and flat can land as rejection. Every one of those makes sense from inside Stone and lands as something else entirely on the other side of the bed. Then there is the joke about being kept. You said the true thing out loud and wrapped it up so that nobody could pick it up and answer it. That is what the joke is for.

The way back

You cannot think your way out of Stone, because Stone is not a thought. It is a state your body goes into, and the way back starts in the body.

First, notice the heaviness while it is happening. Her work comes up at dinner and something in your chest closes. Your voice goes even. You say that is great and you hear how flat it comes out. You find a reason to get up from the table. Feel your feet on the floor. You are not fixing anything yet. You are catching the state in the act.

Second, name it. Out loud if you can, to yourself if you cannot: I went to Stone. Naming the state puts a few inches between you and it, and in that space you can choose what you do next.

One true sentence for this exact moment: "I'm proud of you. I've also been off since the promotion, and that one is mine to sort out, not yours.". Said from the body, one sentence like that does more than an hour of explaining.

State before story: shift the body first, sort out the story after. Practiced over and over, this is what we call Finding Water. The pattern never disappears for good. You just get faster at noticing it and quicker on the way back.

One question men ask

Is it pathetic that this bothers me?
No, and you are not the only man sitting up at night with it. The feeling is not the problem. Money moved, an old story woke up, and a state took over. That happens to men who love their wives and meant every word of the congratulations. The problem is the months of not saying it, because the silence is what she has to live with and the silence is what she has to explain to herself. Naming it is not asking her to earn less. It is not asking her to manage your feelings for you either. It is telling her where you went, so she can stop guessing. You can be proud of her and rattled at the same time. She has heard the first one. She has not heard the second.
