My Wife Stopped Initiating Sex

A three minute read · Ro Paul

The light is off and you are lying there doing the arithmetic you keep promising yourself you will stop doing. When was the last time she came to you first? Not said yes. Not gone along with it. Came to you. You cannot find the day, and you have looked.

You used to reach. Your hand would go to her hip, and some nights she turned toward you and some nights she said she was wiped out, and after enough of the second one your hand stopped making the trip. You told yourself you were being respectful. You were giving her space. You were not going to be one of those husbands who pressures his wife. Some of that was true. Underneath it was the thing you have not said to anyone: you could not take being turned down again. So you stopped asking, and the not-asking climbed into bed with both of you and it has been there ever since. She can feel it. A man who has stopped reaching is not a neutral man lying next to you, and neither of you has said one word about it in a very long time.

This has a name

What you just read is not a low sex drive and not indifference. It is a state, and it has a name.

Stone is the shut-down state. When something triggers him, instead of heat or words, everything in a man goes quiet and heavy. He pulls in. A wall goes up. He is still in the room, but he is gone. From the outside he looks calm or cold. On the inside he has gone somewhere his wife, his kids, and most of the time even he himself cannot reach.

Family: Solid (moves away) Story underneath: "I'm not good enough" Core strategy: Withdraw Energy: heavy, immovable

Stone is one of the five states in the Finding Your Core model. Four are protective states a man snaps into when he is triggered. The fifth, Water, is the centered state and the way back. The full picture of Stone, what it looks like at home and where it comes from, lives on the Stone page.

Why it happens in this exact moment

Bed is where the old story gets its fastest answer. I'm not good enough goes looking for proof, and a turned back at eleven at night hands it more proof in two seconds than a bad month at work can manage. Stone has one job, which is to make sure that never happens to you again. And it has a simple method. Stop reaching. No reach, no no.

Then Stone does the clever part. It gives the retreat a respectable name. You are being patient. You are being considerate. You are being a good man about it. Those sentences may all be true, and they may also be doing a second job at the same time, which is keeping you safe from another rejection. You are not lying, exactly. You found the one story that lets you protect yourself and still feel decent while you do it.

There may be a hundred real reasons she stopped coming to you, and most of them may have nothing to do with whether she wants you. The years with small kids. Being tired in a way sleep does not fix. Her body. Her own state. Something between you that never got repaired and went underground. This page is not about her reasons. This page is about what you did with the silence, because that part is yours.

What it costs

The expensive part is what happens next, and it runs in both directions. You read her not coming to you as she does not want me. She may read your not reaching for her as he does not want me. Two people can lie three feet apart, both feeling unwanted, both sure the other one started it. Nobody is lying. Nobody is being cruel. Nobody is saying anything.

It does not stay in the bedroom either. The hand on her back as you pass behind her in the kitchen goes. The kiss that is not a goodbye goes. The house gets careful and polite. And then the case starts building in your head, the tally of the months, the private list of what you are owed, and a man who is quietly prosecuting his wife is not a warm man to live beside. The distance you are grieving gets a little more real every month you say nothing about it.

The way back

You cannot think your way out of Stone, because Stone is not a thought. It is a state your body goes into, and the way back starts in the body.

First, notice the shutting down while it is happening. It is a decision your body makes before your head is even in the room. The chest goes tight. The arm does not move. You turn to face the wall and pick up your phone instead. Feel your feet under the covers, feel the weight of you on the mattress. Nothing has to happen tonight. You are catching yourself in the act of leaving.

Second, name it. Out loud if you can, to yourself if you cannot: I went to Stone. Naming the state puts a few inches between you and it, and in that space you can choose what you do next.

One true sentence for this exact moment: "I stopped reaching for you because I couldn't take hearing no again. I miss you. I'm not asking you for anything tonight.". Said from the body, one sentence like that does more than an hour of explaining.

State before story: shift the body first, sort out the story after. Practiced over and over, this is what we call Finding Water. The pattern never disappears for good. You just get faster at noticing it and quicker on the way back.

One question men ask

How do I bring this up without making her feel guilty?
Talk about you, and leave her record out of it. The moment you produce the count, the weeks, the last time it happened, it turns into a bill she has to pay, and she may hear an accusation in it no matter how kindly you say it. Say the part that is actually yours: you stopped reaching, here is why you stopped, you miss her. Then ask for nothing in that conversation, and mean the nothing. After that, let ordinary touch come back before sex does. A hand on her back in the kitchen. A kiss with nothing attached to it. Contact that is not a question she has to answer. If every touch has carried a question for years, it may take her a while to believe that a touch is only a touch. That is not her being unfair to you. That is a wall coming down at the speed walls come down, and you are the one who can start.
