Why Do I Go Quiet When She Gets Praised?

A three minute read · Ro Paul

It is a Saturday at somebody else's kitchen table, plates pushed back, second bottle open. Somebody says the thing about your wife. That the fundraiser happened because she made it happen. That when Dan's mother was dying she was at that house every day for a month and nobody asked her to be. The host lifts his glass and says she is the best of the lot of us, and the table says it back, and a hand lands on her shoulder, and she goes pink and looks at the tablecloth.

You lift your glass half a second after everybody else. You hear yourself say she is. It comes out flat, and you hear it come out flat, and so does she. For the rest of the night you are pleasant. You do the plates. You are excellent with the coats.

Eight minutes from home you mention that she talked over Dan twice. You say the hospital story was not quite how it went. You say it lightly, as a small correction, in the voice of a man who is only being accurate. The car goes quiet. Something in your chest sits back down, and you feel better.

A table full of people loved your wife for fifteen seconds tonight, and you have spent the drive home taking it back off her.

This has a name

What you just read is not being a reserved man and it is not accuracy in the car. It is a state, and it has a name.

Ice is the cold, superior state. When something triggers him, a man in Ice rises above it. He gets analytical, precise, dismissive. He stops feeling the moment and starts judging it. He is not gone, like Stone. He is up there, looking down, grading everyone's performance. He usually wins the argument. It usually costs him the connection.

Family: Solid (moves away) Story underneath: "You're not good enough" Core strategy: Contempt Energy: cold, analytical

Ice is one of the five states in the Finding Your Core model. Four of them are protective states a man goes into when something gets past his guard. The fifth, Water, is the centered state and the way back. The full picture of Ice, what it looks like at home and where it comes from, lives on the Ice page.

Why it happens in this exact moment

Praise is not information to a man in Ice. It is a ranking. Ice lives on altitude, on being the one in the room who sees clearly and is not taken in, and a ranking has a top and a bottom to it. When that table lifted her up, you did not experience her going up. You experienced yourself going down. That is why your arm was late. Half a second is how long it takes to work out what somebody else's good moment is costing you.

Underneath is the story Ice always runs, you're not good enough, and in that chair it looked like it had evidence. Nobody at that table has ever said a thing like that about you. Not because you have done nothing. Because the things you do are not the kind that get toasted, and because you would sooner die than say out loud that you would like to be toasted.

And you cannot be envious of your own wife. Sit with how small that admission is. If the feeling in your chest at that table is envy, then the story is true, and it is true about you in front of your friends. Ice will not have it. So the feeling gets a different name inside a second. It is not envy. It is that the praise was a bit much. It is that they do not know her the way you do.

That is what the drive home is for. The correction was never information. It is the state doing its work, which is to grade the thing that threatened you until it is small enough to stand next to. If the fundraiser was mostly other people, if the story was exaggerated, if she was performing a little for the room, then the table was wrong and you have your height back. You bought that with her evening.

Some of this was set up long before her. There are houses with only one prize in them, where a boy learns that praise is a fixed quantity and that when somebody else is admired he is being compared. If you grew up in one of those, you did not walk into that dinner neutral.

What it costs

She learns that her good news carries a tax. Not from anything you say, because you never say it. From the pattern. She gets praised, the drive home goes cold, every time, and she is not stupid. So she starts bringing it home smaller. She mentions the promotion two days late, in a flat voice, as if it were nothing. She tells her sister first. You will feel that as her shutting you out, and you will have built it yourself.

Look at the timing, because that is the cruel part and most men never see it. You do not criticize her at random. You criticize her on the nights she was loved. Her body will make that link long before her mind does, and what it makes is a rule: being admired is dangerous, and it costs me my husband for a night. That is a heavy thing to do to a woman, and you do it with corrections that are half true and delivered in a reasonable voice.

The kids get it from the back seat, in the only version they can hear. They are learning how a man talks about the woman he loves on the night other people praised her.

And you end up in a marriage where you cannot be proud of your wife out loud. It is your table too. Her fundraiser is your household's fundraiser, and the month she gave to Dan's mother is a month your family gave. Meanwhile the thing you actually wanted at that table, which is for one person to say a sentence like that about you, stays exactly where it was, because you cannot admit you want it, so you never go and do the thing that would earn it.

The way back

You cannot think your way out of Ice, and that is the trap, because thinking is exactly where Ice wants you. It is a state your body goes into, and the way back starts in the body.

First, learn the half second. It sits between the table lifting their glasses and your arm going up, and it has a feel to it: a tightening across the chest, the jaw setting, a sudden interest in the tablecloth. Your body knows it is being ranked before you do. Feel your feet on the floor under that table.

Then move first and let the feeling catch up later. Lift the glass all the way and lift it early. Put your hand on her back in front of those people. Say what you would say if you were not defending anything, which is that she carried the whole business and you watched her do it. In Ice the body goes first, because a man who waits to feel warm before he acts warm will wait for the rest of his marriage.

Then make one rule and keep it: nothing gets said about her in the car. No corrections, no small accuracies, no notes on how she came across. Whatever occurs to you within an hour of a room loving your wife is the state talking, not information, and it can wait until Wednesday, when it will have disappeared. That tells you what it was.

Second, name it. Out loud if you can, to yourself if you cannot: I went to Ice. Naming the state puts a few inches between you and it, and in that space you can choose what you do next.

One true sentence for this exact moment, in the car, before you get home: "They were right about you tonight, and I went cold about it. Nothing I said in this car was about you." Said from the body, one sentence like that does more than an hour of explaining.

State before story: shift the body first, sort out the story after. Practiced over and over, this is what we call Finding Water. The pattern never disappears for good. You just get faster at noticing it and quicker on the way back.

One question men ask

Am I supposed to fake being happy for her?
No. You are supposed to move before you feel it, which is a different thing, and it is the only order that works in this state. Warmth is not something you manufacture and then lift the glass with. It is what comes back afterward, once you have lifted the glass properly, in front of people, while the cold thing in your chest is still sitting there. Lift it anyway. It takes four seconds and it will not kill you. Then do the part nobody wants to do. Be alone with the fact that you wanted somebody at that table to say a sentence like that about you. You are allowed to want that. Most men want it and almost none will say the word out loud, which is why so many of them are cold in cars. What you are not allowed to do is take it out of her, because she is not the reason nobody said it about you. There is something in your life you have not done, or have done and never let anybody see. The envy points straight at it. Look at it, and do not take it out on your wife in the car instead.
