Three weeks ago you said yes. Someone put a Saturday on the calendar, poker at Dave's, a hike, a beer after work, and you meant it. You told your wife about it. You were looking forward to it.
Then Saturday arrives. It is five o'clock, you are on the couch, and the whole thing has somehow grown to four hundred pounds. You pick up your phone. Sorry man, something came up. You send it an hour before you were supposed to walk out the door, and the second it is gone you feel something you would never say out loud. You feel fantastic. The house is quiet. The night is yours again. The relief goes all the way down to your knees.
This has a name
What you just read is not flakiness and not a full schedule. It is a state, and it has a name.
Stone is the shut-down state. When something triggers him, instead of heat or words, everything in a man goes quiet and heavy. He pulls in. A wall goes up. He is still in the room, but he is gone. From the outside he looks calm or cold. On the inside he has gone somewhere his wife, his kids, and most of the time even he himself cannot reach.
Stone is one of the five states in the Finding Your Core model. Four are protective states a man snaps into when he is triggered. The fifth, Water, is the centered state and the way back. The full picture of Stone, what it looks like at home and where it comes from, lives on the Stone page.
Why it happens in this exact moment
When you said yes, you meant it. You were not lying to your friend and you were not lying to yourself. The yes came from a Tuesday, from a version of you with a little room in him. The cancel comes from a different state entirely, and the two of them never meet.
Stone's whole strategy is to withdraw. It does not arrive announcing fear. It arrives as weight. As a body that will not get off the couch. As a stack of reasons that all sound true, and mostly are true. You are tired. It is a forty minute drive. You have barely seen the kids this week. Every one of those is a real fact, and the state is using all of them.
Then look at the relief. The relief is the part worth staring at. Relief is what a body does when a threat leaves the room. If three men you have known for fifteen years were registering somewhere in you as a threat, then the drive was never the problem and the tiredness was never the problem. Being seen by them was. Stone does not want to be watched, and old friends are the people most likely to notice that something in you has gone quiet this year.
What it costs
Try counting the invitations from this year. Not the ones you cancelled. The ones that came in at all.
Men usually do not confront a friend who bails. They just ask one less time. The group text goes out and your name is on it, and then one week the group text goes out and your name is not on it, and nobody makes an announcement about it. There is no fight and no falling out. The invitations simply get thinner. And because every cancellation ended in relief, you did not feel the room emptying. It felt like your life getting easier.
Then it lands on your marriage. A man with no friends left tends to hand his entire inner life to one person, and that is a heavy thing to hand anybody. Your wife may already be carrying the friendships for both of you, keeping the calendar, keeping the couples you still see. She notices the cancelling long before you do.
Stone tells you that you are staying home. What you are actually doing is disappearing on the people who would have noticed you were gone.
The way back
You cannot think your way out of Stone, because Stone is not a thought. It is a state your body goes into, and the way back starts in the body.
First, notice the weight arriving as the plan gets close. The sinking in your gut when the calendar reminder pops up. The phone already in your hand. The excuse writing itself before you decided anything. Feel your feet on the floor. You do not have to want to go. You just have to catch that a state showed up and started making the decision without you.
Second, name it. Out loud if you can, to yourself if you cannot: I went to Stone. Naming the state puts a few inches between you and it, and in that space you can choose what you do next.
One true sentence for this exact moment, sent to the friend instead of the excuse: "I don't want to come tonight and I'm coming anyway. See you at seven.". Said from the body, one sentence like that does more than an hour of explaining. Go for one hour if one hour is what you have. Stone counts a full evening as impossible and an hour as nothing, and it is wrong about both.
State before story: shift the body first, sort out the story after. Practiced over and over, this is what we call Finding Water. The pattern never disappears for good. You just get faster at noticing it and quicker on the way back.
One question men ask
- Is it so bad to want a night at home?
- No. Rest is not the problem here. A man who is not in Stone can want a quiet night and take it, and he can say no three weeks out, when saying no actually costs him something. Stone does not say no. Stone says yes, then cancels at the last minute, because the yes buys peace now and the cancel buys peace later, and neither one asked you to be honest with anybody. So the test is not whether you stayed home. The test is the relief. If the relief was small, you were tired and you needed a couch. If the relief was enormous, then something about sitting in a room with those men was landing on you as a threat, and that is worth knowing about yourself.
